History and Origins of Parc de la Ciutadella

What used to be an old citadel of the XVIII century, is now one of the most iconic gardens of the city. It is one of the most popular and well-known parks in the city, and features a wide variety of recreational and cultural attractions.

In the old times, Barcelona was trapped inside big walls that were defending the city from outsiders but was also limiting the growth and expansion of the city itself. For military purposes, Barcelona was surrounded by a fortress in Montjuic and a huge citadel on the other extreme.

But in 1841 the authorities decided to turn down the citadel and in 1888, due to the international world fair, the whole are was rebuilt with many buildings, gardens and statues. Today in this area you can find the Parliament of Catalonia, many historical buildings and even the zoo.

This big garden is one of the favorite areas for a nice walk on Sunday morning. Full of energy and with plenty of people enjoying the sunny days of Barcelona. The park covers an area of approximately 70 hectares and is home to a number of different gardens, including the Joan Brossa gardens, the Botanical Garden, and the Zoo of Barcelona. Visitors can also find several lakes and fountains, including the waterfall Fountain, which is the largest monumental fountain in the city.

Parc de la Ciutadella is also a great place for sports and outdoor activities. It has a large sports area with facilities for football, basketball, and paddle tennis, as well as a skatepark, and a BMX track.

Overall, Parc de la Ciutadella is a must-see attraction for anyone visiting or having a tour in Barcelona. It's a great place to relax and enjoy the beautiful Mediterranean weather, and offers something for visitors of all ages and interests. Whether you're looking to explore the city's natural beauty, learn about its history and culture, or simply have some fun, Parc de la Ciutadella is the perfect place to do it.
